Slash
- His Way Through the Constellation by torakowalski -- This is one of those lovely, quiet little stories. It features amnesiac John and a Rodney who is conflicted about whether he should want his old friend back or to keep the new one.
- Geeks in Love by chelle -- I'm recommending this fic because it makes me happy. I've read it twice since it was posted today, and was about to read it again when it occurred to me that I ought to use it to update my recs page with. It's John and Rodney fuzziness, but it's team as well - in the sense of team that includes Radek and Elizabeth. One of my favourite kinds.
- No Holds Barred by Etui -- This is a John and his Issues fic. This is a really good John and his Issues fic. Best of all, John works through some of his issues to arrive at a happy ending for himself and Rodney. (But not before messing things up a bit.)
- Standing in for Atlas by anonymous -- (pre-slash) This is another slightly heartbreaking story. Rodney is a hero but he doesn't much care for it.
- McKay's Symphony of Two in Ten by anonymous -- This is a beautiful story. A little heartbreaking at the end, but beautiful. I don't want to say too much for fear of spoiling it, but I'm really hoping there with be a sequel once the author is revealed. Go read it!
- Signal To Noise Ratio by yin_again -- Hot, hot, hot ... and funny. This was written for the multifandom kink and cliche challenge and it's phone sex, John and Rodney style.
- One More Atmosphere by Cate -- This is a lovely little vignette set just post Grace Under Pressure. It gives us a much needed taste of the emotional fallout that the show's writers denied us.
- The New Math by Corinna -- Sentient (or sapient) Atlantis is a fanon trope that can be well done but is often just overdone. This is a nicely done, fun story featuring an aware Atlantis as matchmaker. If you're in the mood for decent length happy fluffy fic, give this one a go.
Story is in two parts. Second is linked at the end of the first.
- Everything Old is New Again by linaerys -- (some non-explicit Rodney/OFC and Rodney/OFC/OMC) Aged almost to death by a Wraith attack, Rodney and Elizabeth's lives are saved by an experimental treatment Carson developed to reverse the unnatural aging caused by the Wraith feeding process. In order for the treatment to work, they have to be de-aged to younger than they were so that when their bodies stablise they'll be near their actual age again.
This sets the stage for John to watch, and repress madly, as a beautiful, twenty-two year-old Rodney decides to celebrate escaping death and the comeliness of his younger body by "sharing his charms" with the Athosian people during their summer festivals.
I liked linaerys' explanation of why the Athosians would be so pleased to let a horny young Rodney do his level best to impregnate their female population (including married women). She also did a nice job with John's anger and confusion over Rodney's behaviour. The ending is slightly bittersweet but it's satisfying, and the author has hinted that she may write a sequel.
- Like a Long, Slow Nervous Breakdown by Speranza -- This is my favourite kind of fic: slightly porny, but highly emotionally satisfying. The story is told in snippets. The reader gets to glimpse the evolution of John and Rodney's realtionship, from adrenaline fueled fuckbuddies to emotionally tied lovers, while jumping back to the story of how they got together.
- The Entire Truth by Corinna -- Unrequited love is a bitch. This story is a lovely, heartbreaking and oh so real expression of that universal constant.
- Unanticipated Outcomes by TheGrrrl -- I will admit that I love pretty much anything TheGrrrl writes, and this is another lovely jewel in her crown. I love the way she describes John, and her Rodney voice is excellent. Both the guys are so very them. If you're looking for a longer fic that leaves you happy and glowy at the end, this is the one for you.
It's two parts. The second is linked to at the end of the first.
- Hands Away by cgb -- (also McKay/OMC) A little dark, this story is the hurt without the comfort. Rodney's got a relationship of sorts with John, but he keeps conflating it with an abusive relationship from his past. One gets the feeling that John would like to be comforting Rodney, but he really has no idea what's going on with the other man.
Unlike your average Rodney-has-an-abusive-ex story, this one seems more believeable. When he got sucked into the orbit of the abuser he was young, vulnerable, and needy in the way kids off to college and away from home for the first time can be. Once he is burned and sees the relationship for what it is, it leaves him stiff and wary, not a sniveling wimp. Best of all, John (and his dick) is not a magic cure for his issues. He doesn't even talk about them, and nothing is solved at the end.
If you're looking for a light and fluffy read, this is not the story for you. If you're in the mood for something real and a bit painful, give this one a try.
- A Team is Borne by Danvers -- The lost city was the perfect place for people that didn't belong anywhere else.
I debated about whether this belonged in the slash or gen catagory. The bulk of the story itself is basically gen from Lorne's POV, but there's a little smidgen of Sheppard/McKay, as well as wistful hints at Lorne/Weir, so I'm calling it slash with light het just to be safe. The story is a fun account of Lorne's difficulties in finding a fourth member for his team. It made me smile even though I was in a really pissy mood when I started reading it and made me smile again when I reread it a couple days later.
- Kiss by the Book by Ladycat -- John has expectations about how Rodney will approach sex with him, and those expected behaviours are what he wants. Or what he thinks he wants, anyway.
This story is about how good it can be when one's expectations aren't met, and how what one gets can be better than what one thought one wanted.
- Stockholm Syndrome (Tearing Down the House) by mousewitchy -- (some Rodney/OMC, but John/Rodney again by the end) This is a really well done take on how the perceptions even of a brilliant scientist like Rodney can be shaped and altered by small, careful tugs of manipulation.
- Freedom's Just Another Word for Nothing Left To Lose by synecdochic -- (future fic) This story is incredible, beautiful, and heartbreaking. It's Rodney's life after John, Atlantis, and the SGC. It's a long one, so make sure you have an hour or so free before you begin, because you won't want to walk away in the middle.
- Intuition by solvent90 -- This is a lovely, quiet little fic. It's John watching Rodney, and Rodney watching John, and what happens when each notices.
- Hearing is Believing by Vanwealda -- (also some Lorne/Parrish) Another long one! This story starts out with John returning to Atlantis after having been kidnapped, believing Rodney to be dead. The story of John and Rodney's ordeal is told through skillful use of flashbacks, interspersed with the Atlantis crew's attempts to find Rodney and get coherent information from John.
- MVP by Speranza -- When I read this last night, I was too incoherent with squee and sheer exhaustion to leave the author feedback much beyond, "Oh how I love this!" It's a lovely piece, showing us how Rodney (accidentally) ends up in a very loving relationship with John and how he feels about John's tendancy towards self-sacrifice. Characterisations are spot-on throughout, and it combines humour and angst to perfection, leaving the reader with a lovely warm glow at the end.
- Three Graces by purna -- (some mild het content) This was a wonderful story, with some of my favourite things. It had Zelenka acting as a good friend to Rodney. It had a cool scifi plot. It had a really lovely take on Rodney's and John's relationship (as seen by Zelenka). It was a decent length, too!
Gen
- A Single Dram of Heaven by Brat Farrar -- Written for the flashfic backstory challenge, this is a lovely little vignette about a young John being taken up in a plane for the first time, and what happens when he comes back to earth that cements his attitude that in the sky is the best place to be.
- Somewhere Behind Me by barely_bean -- This is a lovely little friendship piece wherein John learns the difference between the family that you're born with and the one you choose. Or the one that chooses you.
- Screening by Circadienne -- Short and powerful. John Sheppard and PTSD. The character voices are just right, and John is very much himself here. It's not a happy fic, but it's not a hopeless one either.
- Nonverbal by siegeofangels -- This is hysterical and understated. It's all about the nonverbal communication between the Atlantis first-wavers, and it's so perfect I can see them.
- Chipping Stone by Sealie -- Finally! Someone who doesn't think that the way Cadman treats Rodney is cute. This story is a good, serious look at how Rodney feels about Cadman's actions in Duet and Critical Mass. I've been so fed up with the prevailing Cadman love in fandom that this was really a breath of fresh air.
Note: it's not a Cadman bashing fic. She is very much in character here. The story is a serious examination of her actions from Rodney's perspective.
- Just Like the Richard Gere Movie by miss porcupine -- This is a really excellent look at Sheppard from the POV of the enlisted Marines going with the Atlantis expedition just before they left. Despite the "other" POV, I really felt for Sheppard at the end.
- That Which is Broken by Sholio -- A little more wheat from ff.net. This fic can probably be best summed up with: The best laid plans of mice and men oft' gang awry.
In the aftermath of the Arcturus Project disaster, John and Rodney's friendship is strained to the point of breaking, prompting Teyla and Zelenka to conspire and (with Elizabeth's blessing) manufacture a situtation to bring them back together again. One thing I liked about this story was that it addressed the fact that Ronon and Teyla had also had the trust between them disrupted during Trinity.
- No Slouch by Liondragon -- A true flashfic at less than 500 words, this story is nevertheless intense. It's the moment where a golden boy version of Sheppard changes to become the hands-in pockets, non-regulation hair, lackadasical guy we all know from the show. While canonically Sheppard doesn't seem to have ever been a model officer (as per his admission to Weir in The Intruder that most people didn't think he'd ever make it past captain), this is still a nice look at how things could have been.
- Be My Homeward Dove by Sarah T. -- This is a gentle little Weir-Sheppard-McKay friendship fic (with a little Beckett for good measure) set in the gap between The Siege III and The Intruder. The characters' voices are just right, and it's a lovely look at the way Elizabeth takes care of her boys, while they take care of her right back.
- Twenty-four Hours with a Rodneysaur by Moonloon -- Before I got turned on to Atlantis, I had no idea that a single fandom could support so much pure crack. This story is some of the good crack. It's completely adorable, and doubly so now that it's illustrated.
- Empty Bottle by gaffer42 -- It's totally understandable if you've never set metaphorical foot in FanFiction.net; most of the stuff there is perfectly awful. I still check it out now and again (usually when very bored, indeed), because periodically I will find a story that makes the effort of sorting through the chaff worth my time.
This story is a nice little piece in the almost-episodic vein (it actually is something of a riff on an early SG-1 ep). Most of the story is in Ronon POV, which I liked. I would have liked it even better if the whole thing had been in Ronon POV, rather than shifting amongst the characters periodically. Still, it's a nice look at how the Atlantis crew deal with having Rodney stuck in a painful, life-threatening situation, and the lengths they'll go to in order to get him out of it.
AU
- A Farm in Iowa by sheafrotherdon -- (slash) I'm actually recommending the whole series she's written in this universe, which can be found here. It's kid!fic with some connection to the actual SGA/SG-1 canon-verse, though not a whole lot in the early parts. It's very sweet and very JohnandRodney.
- Animal Husbandry by Casspeach -- (slash) I love this story with a vast, unreasonable love. I cannot tell you how many times I've read it since it first appeared in the sga_flashfic Harlequin challenge.
Rodney's a vet from the big city. John's a small town rodeo cowboy. Both are so wonderfully, painfully human in this -- it's totally worth reading even if you're completely unfamiliar with Atlantis just as a great bit of fiction. Plus, there are horses, so you really can't go wrong.
